Research Scholars! Application started for Maulana Azad National Fellowship For Minority Students

The objective of the Fellowship is to provide integrated five year fellowships in the form of financial assistance to students from minority communities, as notified by the Central Government to pursue higher studies such as M. Phil and Ph.D. The Fellowship will cover all Universities/Institutions recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) and section 3 of the UGC Act alongwith those which are not under the purview of UGC and will be implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs through UGC for students belonging to the minority communities. The fellowship under Maulana Azad National Fellowship for minority students will be on the pattern of UGC Fellowships awarded to research students pursuing regular and full time M. Phil and Ph.D courses. The fellowship holders under this Fellowship will be known as Ministry of Minority Affairs scholars.

ELIGIBILITY:

A candidate has to fulfil the following conditions to be eligible for award of this fellowship 

(i) He/she should belong to one of the minority communities notified under Section 2 (c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.

(ii) He/she should get admission and registration for regular and full time M.Phil/Ph.D courses in University/Academic Institution by fulfilling conditions of admission of that University/Institution, subject to provisions of the Fellowship as per advertisement of UGC.

(iii) The minority community students once considered eligible for the fellowship shall not be entitled to benefits under any other source, Central or State Government or any other body like UGC for the same study.

(iv) Prior clearance of NET/SLET examination will not be a prerequisite for award of Maulana Azad National Fellowship for minority students for M.Phil/Ph.D.

(v) In order to qualify for the award of JRF/ SRF the UGC norms would be applicable at pre-M.Phil and pre-Ph.D stage, respectively, including the minimum score of 50% at post 

graduate level.

A week-long Workshop on Human Development in Kolkatta for PG holders


Institute of Development Studies Kolkata is organising a week-long workshop on Human
Development from December 3-7, 2012 at the Salt Lake Campus of the Institute for teachers in
colleges, universities and research institutes in eastern India, and others interested in
development issues, having at least a Master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized
university, working in government and non-government organizations including the media.


Course objective:
The participants in the course are expected to develop adequate analytical capability to deal
with development policy issues from the human development perspective, which is crossdisciplinary.
References will be drawn from important studies of both theoretical and applied
kind in order to provide an in-depth understanding of the issues, highlighting their contested
nature.
Course outline:
1. Conceptual foundations: Concepts of human capabilities and functionings – centrality of
freedom. Normative concerns and positive-analytic aspects of resource allocation. Human
capital and human capability. Human rights and human development.
2. Human development and national economic prosperity: Interconnections between the
two. Importance of economic growth in enhancing human capabilities – financing human
development. Quality of growth and its distribution. Human development in history.
3. Issues in measurement: Indicators of human development – aggregation issues. Evolution
of the Human Development Index (HDI) and the debates surrounding it. Beyond HDI –
Multidimensional Poverty and adjusting HDI for inequality.
4. Population dynamics and health: Age structure, sex ratio, fertility, mortality and
morbidity – social determinants. Efficiency and equity of resource allocation in health
care.
5. Participation and empowerment: Role of civil and political activism in bringing about
changes in public policy. Women’s agency and social change. Panchayati Raj institutions
and participation. Role of media.
6. Regional perspectives on human development in India: National economic prosperity and
record of human development in India. How to learn from experiences of different states.
Overview of State Human Development Reports. From report to action – strategies for
human development.

Felix Master’s alumni who have obtained a Distinction can apply for a DPhil Felix scholarship.
Exactly the same criteria and application process will apply to Felix Master’s alumni as apply to any other candidate applying for a DPhil scholarship. Only one such scholarship will be granted per year.
Candidates must have at least a first class Bachelor’s degree from an Indian university or comparable institution.
Exceptionally those with an upper second-class degree at the Bachelor’s level may be considered if they hold a first class degree at the Master’s level.
Those who already hold degrees from universities outside India are not eligible to apply.
Those who have already taken up a scholarship to pursue PhD studies at an Indian university are also not eligible for a Felix Scholarship.

Felix Scholarships are intended for scholars who would be unable, without financial assistance, to take up their place and who have not studied outside their home country. You should ensure that you apply for the correct course, as applications for an extension of a course or other additional funding will not be considered.

Candidates must not, once installed at Oxford, apply for any scholarship that would interfere with the tenure of the Felix Scholarship. Application for a Felix Scholarship can be made through only one of the three academic institutions (University of Oxford, University of Reading and SOAS, University of London). Candidates must already have submitted a formal application for admission through one of the institutions before applying for a Felix Scholarship. Felix Master’s alumni who have obtained a Distinction can apply for a DPhil Felix scholarship. Exactly the same criteria and application process will apply to Felix Master’s alumni as apply to any other candidate applying for a DPhil scholarship. Only one such scholarship will be granted per year.

Candidates must apply direct to Oxford for admission to the course they wish to study. Detailed advice on such matters as course application forms, arrangements for fieldwork, etc., will be available on request from Oxford. Admission to the M.Phil., Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. and Direct Ph.D. programme at SREE SANKARACHARYA UNIVERSITY OF SANSKRIT, KALADY, Last Date: 31.10.2012

Applications in the prescribed format are invited through Online Registration from eligible candidates for admission to the M.Phil., Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. and Direct Ph.D. programmes, December 2012 under various Faculties of the University.

Candidates who possess Master’s Degree in the subject concerned or in the related subjects or subjects specified by the Department with not less than 55% marks/ B+ (B Plus) grade of this University or equivalent degree of any other Indian or Foreign Universities recognized by this University are eligible to apply for the M.Phil. and Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. programmes. A relaxation of 5% marks is allowed as per UGC guidelines in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST communities. Post Graduate students in English/Hindi/Malayalam/Sanskrit and Comparative Literature and Linguistics can apply for the Interdisciplinary course in Translation Studies. Those candidates awaiting results of P.G. Examinations can also apply. However, such candidates shall produce their P.G. marklists and qualifying certificates within three months from the date of admission. Failure in the production of marklists within that
period will lead to the automatic cancellation of their admission.

Admissions to the M.Phil. and Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. programmes shall be on the basis of an entrance examination and interview conducted by the University. UGC/JRF qualified candidates, teachers of Universities, Government Colleges and Aided Colleges with a minimum of 2 published works in referred research journals are exempted from the entrance examination. UGC NET/SLET candidates are not exempted from the Entrance Test. In each subject there shall be a rank list prepared, based on the
marks secured by the candidates in the entrance exam and interview conducted by the Research Committees of the academic departments concerned. Admissions shall be made from the rank list.
Those candidates who possess the M.Phil. Degree of this University with B+ grade or equivalent M.Phil. degree of other Universities recognized by the University and who wish to register for the Ph.D. programme can seek direct registration for the Ph.D programme, subject to their fulfilling the other relevant conditions. Applicants seeking admission to the Direct Ph.D. programme in Ayurveda should have Masters Degree in Ayurveda from a recognized University and approved by C.C.I.M. Admission to the Direct Ph.D. programme in Ayurveda shall be on the basis of the Entrance Examination conducted by the University and the interview conducted by the Research Committee.
