CSSS, Calcutta Called applications for PhD



The Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, was founded in February 1973. Financed primarily by matching grants from the ICSSR and the Government of West Bengal, the Centre has full academic autonomy, is designed to function democratically and is proud of its impeccable record of public accountability.
Applications are invited, in the prescribed form, for admission to the Ph.D. Programme of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. The Ph.D. Programme of the Centre is affiliated to Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Applicants may choose from any of the following Social Science disciplines: Economics, History, Political Science, Geography, Sociology/Social Anthropology, Development Studies [Health, Education,
Environment etc.], Women’s Studies and Cultural Studies [Literature, Film Studies, Art History, Philosophy etc.] A maximum of 10 (ten) candidates will be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme foe 2011. The eligible candidates will have to appear in (a) a written test of two hours duration and will be called for (b) the interview only if they qualify in the written test. Candidates who have already passed M.Phil. / NET/
SET/RTP/Teacher Fellowship need not appear for the written examination but will have to appear for the interview. The final selection will be made on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the interview. The list of eligible candidates for a) written test and b) interview will be displayed on the web site and on the Notice Board of the Centre.

Eligibility for Admission: Applicants should have a Post Graduate Degree from a recognized University in any of the Social Sciences or Humanities.
For selection the Reservation Policy of the State Government will be applicable.
Six Fellowships are available under the Institutional Doctoral Fellowships Scheme of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. The fellowship amount is at par with the UGC rates and is for two years, extendable to the third year after review. One salary-protected fellowship is available for an employed scholar of a University/Research Institute; however the duration of the fellowship will be a maximum of two years. Selected candidates will have to carry out research under the supervision of a member of the CSSSC faculty and will have to register for a Ph.D degree with Jadavpur University. The CSSSC Doctoral Programme requires students to participate regularly in its academic programmes. Applicants may note that the Centre has no hostel facilities.
